In addition to honey, bees make another substance called propolis. It is a resinous substance that is made mainly from tree sap, and has antibiotic properties due to its content of biologically active flavonoids.

Propolis is available in many forms: tablets, capsules, ointments, powders, extracts, creams, lotions, and other cosmetics. It is also found in small quantities in honey.

Topical propolis products are applied directly to the skin. It is not recommended to apply propolis directly to the eyes. Products for internal use vary and there is no recommended daily dosage.

Propolis has been used for more than 2,000 years to prevent wound infection and other illnesses. It has been found to be active against bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. Research suggest that topical propolis can affect genital herpes, oral surgery, wound healing, and vaginal infections.

Propolis has been found to be non toxic when ingested orally or applied to the skin. Propolis applied to the eyes can cause an allergic reaction and can cause redness and swelling.
